When Vision of Escaflowne was being produced, producers wanted someone that would have the mind similar to the Hitomi, the high school female protagonist in the series. An open audition was held, and among the many candidates, the person that they chose was Sakamoto Maaya. When Maaya was chosen to play her debuting role, and a leading role in that, she was only at the age of 16. At that time she also had no previous voice-acting experience. While her voice acting in Vision of Escaflowne wasn't particularly outstanding, either due to the nature of the role itself or Maaya's lack of relevant experience, she did, however, proved to be an exceptional singer. "Yakusoku wa Iranai", "Hikari no Naka E" and other insert songs in Escaflowne, all performed by Maaya, are some of the most well-known and praised anime songs. This is partially due to the beautiful composition by the famous musician Kanno Yoko, but Maaya's ability to sing to these pieces of music with incredible range and variety definitely deserves a lot of credit. Since then, Maaya had worked with Kanno Yoko to produce other famous works, such as "Platinum", the 3rd season opening theme to Card Captor Sakura, and "Yubiwa", the theme song to the Escaflowne movie. Also, Kanno Yoko composed all the songs to all of Maaya's personal albums, which currently stands at three albums in total. |
